Jonas, yes. I too wonder whether there's enough material for two movies. But the news is such, scheduled to be released in 2009 and 2010.

cypherbios, yeah. I don't think there's any way to make a complete Silmarillion movie, it's too much of a history book. But it's possible to extract materials from it to be put into "The Hobbit".

Updated:
It is reported here that first movie is on "The Hobbit" while sequel works as a bridge to fill the gap between The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Great. So apparently Peter Jackson is now back in friendship with New Line. Now we can look forward to something in the leagues of LoTR.

Maybe they should make movies on "The Silmarillion". :)

Wonderful Wonderful news!!
I always wanted to know more about the development of Bilbo's character and that was what got me going on the Hobbit.
You must be wrong on the two film thing though becoz I agree with Jonas theres hardly enough content!
Anyway Many thanks for the wonderful news!
May the power of the ring be with you!

Yes, that is amazing. Great news!

I can't see how a Silmarillion movie could be done, there is some too abstract stuff there to be represented in movies... or it is just me that have no imagination do to so :P

BTW, the book's tile is "The Hobbit" not "The Hobbits".
Regards.

Two? Is there really enough material in the Hobbit to warrant two movies? As much of a Tolkien and Middle-earth nutcase that I am, I somehow find that hard to believe. Although I'd love to be proven wrong!

And after that...well, there's always Silmarillion to make film of (which is about as likely to happen as me becoming the next president of the U.S....)

[...] Laknath placed an observative post today on Two new LOTR movies - Yea!Here’s a quick excerptAnd there’s no need to talk about LOTR movies done by Peter Jakson because they made a land mark in modern Hollywood movies, specially in Special Effects arena.
